Riding Puig de Randa — the Sanctuary Climb
The only mountain road on the Pla, and the plain spends most of the ride pretending it isn’t coming. Out of Llucmajor the Ma-5010 runs almost level across open field — the one place in this world where the ridden line crosses a ford — until the hill that has stood on the horizon the whole way finally has a road up it. Past the fork the link climbs into Randa village, figs and cypresses and palms over the walls, and then the Ma-5018 simply goes up: two hundred and fifty metres in four and a half kilometres, six hairpins turned through more than a half-circle, the tightest pair stacked seventy-five metres apart directly above the roofs. Halfway up, the collada de Gràcia is a real saddle on the ridden line, with the sanctuary of Nostra Senyora de Gràcia built hard against the cliff below the rockfall netting. The last ramp narrows to a single generous lane between a low rubble retaining wall and the bank, prickly pear and agave on the outcrop, and puts you at the three sanctuaries at 542 metres with the whole plain — and every mountain this world has already built — laid out underneath.
This point-to-point line covers 9.9 km, from Llucmajor toward the ford toward the Randa fork toward Randa village toward the collada de Gràcia toward Cura.
The mountain character comes from more than gradient. Limestone, tunnel mouths, dry-stone edges, pine shade, reservoirs, and compressed hairpins change the view as much as the elevation.
Captured in muntro Relief, gradient, and how to pace it
This is serious vertical terrain. The road spans 400 m from bottom to top and accumulates 400 m of ascent, with sampled ramps reaching 7.6%. The profile makes the pacing decision visible before the first pedal stroke.
Ride the early gradients a shade below the effort you think you can hold. The broken rhythm rewards cadence changes and short, controlled pressure rather than repeated spikes above threshold.
Points to watch for
The best Mallorca routes are remembered as a sequence of places, not as a GPX line. These are the changes of scene that organise this ride.
- 01
Randa village
The mountain rises abruptly from the central plain behind the village roofs.
- 02
The upper hairpins
The road tightens as the view opens across almost the whole island.
- 03
Santuari de Cura
The summit sanctuary gives the climb a true destination rather than an arbitrary line.
Why this road works indoors
muntro does not flatten Puig de Randa — the Sanctuary Climb into a workout backdrop. The route’s bends, height, and junction order come from the road itself, while a compatible trainer reproduces the changing gradient under your pedals.
The point-to-point format gives the session a destination. There is no need to invent a finish when the real road already has one.
